from bare roadsides to verdant highways

Imagine walking, biking or traveling through a highway lined with trees and ornamental plants such that most of the things you would see on both sides of the road would be green, aside from the structures. It would be cool -- not only figuratively speaking but literally as well. Ive read that the color green is good for the eyes because of its relaxing effect. Our respiratory system would be unburdened of the stress caused by air pollution because trees clean the air. Sounds impossible, perhaps not anymore after August 25, 2006.

A week from now, thousands of people and even more from all over the country will be taking part in a simultaneous and massive tree-planting activity, dubbed as the Green Philippine Highways Project or Green Chain. It is the brainchild of DENR Secretary Angelo T. Reyes, with the intention to transform bare roadsides into verdant highways and fighting air pollution.

From the briefing on the Green Chain project, held on August 3, 2006 during the visit of Secretary Reyes to CAraga Region, the project covers the three major highways in the country: the Pan Philippine Highway, Manila North Road and West Nautical Highway, with a total length of 3, 489 kilometers.

The DENR will tap multi-sectoral participation of the local government units, from the provincial governments down to the barangays, other government agencies like DPWH and PNP, non-government organizations, industries and the private sector and the academe.

This would be the biggest tree-planting activity in the history of environmental champions and initiatives.

Sorry for being so pessimistic regarding this Jess but I don't think that making this project as a long-time one would be feasible. Remember that electrical wires are placed along the roads. After years of letting those trees grow, they would be cut down because they would interfere with those wirings, which may cause fire, etc.

Next project would be burying those wires underground, which means more costs, higher electricity bill, whatever.

But then again, it's a good idea. And then again, it's just temporary.

you're not the only pessimist about this project, duard..even denr employees themselves, saying that this is all part of the campaign strategy for the coming elections....do u know what most people call those seedlings planted by denr? they're termed "miracle trees".not becuase they have healing or miraculous effects but because it wil take a miracle if even one of the seedling could make it into its full growth....

aside from the green chain, the denr in our region added a human chain such that they have to persuade thousands of people, including students, to line up and clean up the roadside from Lipata to Trento, while others do the planting...i wonder how big was the budget required for this project. ive heard that the salary of the denr employees were delayed, as it was used for the project, such that they call the human chain as "inhuman" chain project. im supposed to be at home today since its a holiday but i woke up early as we were required to go to our respective place of assignments for the tree planting.

if reyes will indeed run for a post, i dont think i will vote for him. he's a typical politician just like many of them.

Politics. Politics. Damn politics. I'm still thinking of our class prophecy that you wrote. A statesman, huh! I can't imagine myself in the politics. Just too transparent and frank to be a politician. Hahaha!

How about you? Any plans of serving the Filipinos by leading them?
